Crown Lengthening
Crown Lengthening For Restorative Purposes
Crown lengthening is a procedure to increase the amount
of tooth extending from the gum line. This procedure
is required to increase the amount of tooth so that a
new crown or restoration can be placed. Crown lengthening
is often needed where there is a crack, tooth decay,
resorption, or extreme wear. Crown lengthening is a necessary
step to ensure that the final restoration fits appropriately
or to avoid the gum problems that can occur when restorations
extend deeply under the gum line. Following the crown
lengthening procedure patients usually wait six to twelve
weeks before proceeding with the final restoration.
Esthetic Crown Lengthening
Esthetic crown lengthening is an elective procedure
to increase the amount of tooth that extends from the
gum line. Crown lengthening is sometimes performed so
that the teeth can be made to look longer and to minimize
what some people refer to as a “gummy smile”.
When crown lengthening is performed, some bone and gum
tissue is removed around the tooth to increase the amount
of crown exposure. This procedure often times improves
tooth dimension and makes a smile look more vibrant and
lifelike.
